Sustainable Swag
Monday, April 22 - 5:00-6:30: Grab a second-hand t-shirt, sweatshirt or other garment from the Free Market and bring it to the makerspace to make free custom gear with vinyl heat transfers.
Learn about vinyl cutting and heat transfer vinyl and walk away with a custom upcycled shirt. Please check the Free Market Website for hours and plan to find a garment ahead of the workshop. If you already have a used shirt you’d like to work with, that’s fine too! Student clubs are invited to send delegates to this workshop to learn how they might use the makerspace for sustainable (and affordable!) options for merch.

Remixed fabrics: Totes, Patterns and Pockets with Courtnie Wolfgang
Monday, April 29, 3:30 - 6:30: Join artist, designer and RISD Professor Dr Courtnie Wolfgang in a hands-on workshop will reflect on her garment-making practice and teach you to make and adapt clothing to fit your body, your needs, and your personal style.
Dr. Courtnie Wolfgang is and artist, scholar and educator whose research is “focused on the intersections of poststructural, feminist and queer theories with critical and radical pedagogies in and through art and design”. This hands-on workshop will draw upon her garment-making practice and teach you to make and adapt clothing to fit your body, your needs, and your personal style. Courtnie will introduce methods for adding pockets to existing garments, crafting tote bags from things you have on hand, cutting your own patterns, and repairing beloved garments to extend their life. You’ll spend the first hour becoming acquainted with a variety of methods and the last two hours working on a project of your choice. You are invited (but not required) to bring any garments you are interested in modifying or repairing along with scraps of fabric, old pillowcases or other material to re-use.

Affirming Alterations with Noel Guetti
Saturday, May 4, 10:00 am - 3:00 pm: The goal of this day-long workshop is to build skills for understanding and changing our clothing to give us greater autonomy and opportunity for self expression.
In the morning, we’ll look at garments that do (and don’t!) fit us well, identify fit/fabric/color qualities that make us feel good, and learn how to look for those qualities and assess whether a piece of clothing will give that feeling.
In the afternoon, we’ll learn and practice basic alteration techniques for making affirming changes to our existing garments. Basic sewing skills helpful, but absolutely not required!
A private space for trying on clothing will be available, and any level of participation in conversations about fit is welcome, from modeling your garment for the group, to listening and taking notes for looking at your clothes at home.
Lunch will be provided!
